Women and Revolutionary Struggle

category dublin | anti-capitalism | event notice author Friday May 26, 2006 11:52author by sovietpop - wsmauthor email sovietpop at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

A day of videos and discussion
revwomendayschool.jpg

This year sees the anniversary of both the Spanish Civil War and the 1916 uprising. This dayschool looks at the 'hidden history' of women's involvement in both events, and asks what struggles do today's women need to fight and how do we go about achieving the change we want.

The opening and closing sessions are for women only, but everyone is welcome to take part in all the other sessions.

What struggles do today's women need to fight and how do we go about achieving the change we want.
Maybe the revolutionary idea of childcare so more women could attend . I have not seen anything on the flyer to surgest that this basic need would be catered for on this womens day event.
Also my sister is unable to attend as the teachers club has very limited access for those in wheelcahirs.
Tis a pity some of us have no choice but to be excluded from what i hope is a great day for all you able bodied ,childless revolutionarys...

typical, wait until the last minute and then air your complaints. did u contact these women asking for childcare or wheelchair access or are you just posting assumptions? one again you are creating unnecessary hassle and spreading devision in the libertarian scene, youre consistant at least.

by all reports a good day was had by all who could attend .

As for" creating unnecessary hassle" , there are MANY serious issues for women in the libertarian scene that need to be addressed , urgently.

couldn't attend.
The 'unnecessary hassle' reffered to in the last post- what could that be?

It would be perfectly reasonable , if in the future meetings publicised ,wd contain the
phrase 'Child -care facilities', then people wd not have to ask publicly if they are being
provided. In terms of women's activism, inclusiveness wd be key.
You are not necessarily physically handicapped by travelling with a child
in fact it can be quite an education for them to observe the mechanisms of protest.

who are we protesting on behalf of?

The victims of war, prosperity and exploitation are in the main, children.
Observe the taxi driver's strike of many years ago and the wives and children coming out and facing intimidation and fear. it was less than a generation ago.

grass-roots activism has to be inclusive, other wise it simply will not work.

The teachers club it self does not have the space for childcare and from RAR's past experience they are not happy with having kids running around the place. It was an over sight not to have advertised child care, when a mother did ask about it, we offer to pay for her child care. This seems to be the best we can do in the situation of the teachers club. In the past when there was space for child care it has been provided on a volunteer capacity by the people who attended. Sadly there is the problem of insurance which we do need to think about.

Which is probably a good thing...

The Bitchin' Kitchen is a co-operative facility for cooking. The idea of co-operation,in community based activism is not that rare. Tho' high prices of rent etc, wd be off-putting, but surely volunteers and a premises or an art class for kids somewhere near town during important meetings isn't completely off the radar. Paying is not necessary, in fact that wd bring in a whole lot of health and safety issues,
Local parks include the Garden of Remembrance, there are museums and galleries and quite a few
places could be sourced for children of activists to be safely supervised.

as to kids running about, yes they will do that. a lot. keeps you thin...
